Amazon Plans to Open Customer Service
Center in Cape Town, South Africa
Amazon today announced it is planning to expand its presence in Cape Town, South Africa with the opening of a new customer service center. The center, which is scheduled to open in October 2010, is expected to create more than 600 new jobs during its first two years of operation, with an additional 400 seasonal jobs to be added during the fourth quarter holiday season.
"Amazon's investment into the Western Cape once again underlines the province's quality as a world class BPO destination," says Fagri Semaar interim CEO of BPeSA Western Cape.
"It's important to have customer service representatives available when it's convenient for our customers," said Brent Jaye, director of Amazon's North America Customer Service. "We are pleased with the South African and the Western Cape government's commitment to developing a customer service center industry. Cape Town is widely regarded for its hospitality and we are excited about drawing upon this customer-centric talent pool."

During the first quarter of 2010, Amazon.com attained sales of approximately US $7.13 billion, 46% more than the amount recorded for the same period of 2009. Amazon.com offers more than 40 categories of products (including books, music, video games, electronics and others) and serves millions of customers around the world.
